Multi-Purpose Path Planned for E. 71st Street

A new project is being planned to build a multi-use path along 71st street from Binford Blvd east to Hague Road.   The group that made this idea become possible is BRAG.  BRAG is a non-profit organization dedicated to rejuvenating and revitalizing the areas surrounding Binford Blvd.  It stands for Binford Redevelopment and Growth.  Evidence of BRAG can be seen by the remodeled commercial areas and landscape around 71st and Binford.  All of the new shopping centers, including Kroger and George’s Neighborhood Grill, are due to the work of BRAG.

I attended a public meeting held on Thursday, January 26th, at Castleton United Methodist Church.  The purpose of the meeting was to inform interested people around the area about the upcoming project.  They also had an aerial view of what the path will look like when completed on display throughout the meeting.  The DPW Design Project Manager, Jim Loew, and DPW Project Manager, Angela Nicholson were the presenters.

The project has an estimated construction cost is 1.28 million and is being funded by a federal grant.  The trail will be 10 ft. wide and made of asphalt with new drainage units installed and new pedestrian walkways built across busy intersections.  The estimated time of construction is beginning Spring 2013 through Fall 2013, although there may be minor utility work done prior to these dates.

There are many possible benefits to this project that make it a worthwhile undertaking.  Increased pedestrian walking and biking will not only promote better health but also lower traffic rates and reduce harmful emissions from car.  One of my favorite benefits to this project is that the new trail will allow more connectivity.  We will be able to bike from this path to the Skiles Test Parkway, Fall Creek Parkway, and then the Monon!   It’s just another great way of expanding our growing network of trails and walkways around Indy.

In addition to these benefits, this project could also potentially help raise property values in the area, which makes me a happier homeowner.  This northeast area of the city boasts its fabulous location, neighborhoods and schools…soon it will be able to boast about its connectivity by foot and bicycle!

What a great Idea. I think BRAG is a great example of what neighbors can do to impact a neighborhood. It sure helps us sell those homes and so will a path along 71st Street. Can we get it to reach Keystone??? Thanks for writing

I use the bikepath, and I think it is a good idea. Keeping non-profit groups in mind, I'm now acutely aware of America's culture problem; it is Indianapolis, the Racetrack City. Indigenous people are such REBELS. They have refused to attend Public Schools as children. Apparently they think they're Europeon Castle Aristocracy. The Panceatic solution to this Empirish Enigma is (FREE) ADULT SCHOOLING. Us might get started by meeting in the Conference Room somewhere with some old school books (notheing newer than 1990). I'm Mickey, "Mort," if you think so.
